on my heart

the story…

Five years ago, Sadie Coleman's dream to become a nature photographer perished along with her twin sister Cameron. Now Sadie has one chance to honor the promise she made to Cameron—to honor that dream—before she begins law school in the fall. Sadie hasn't picked up a camera since she was seventeen, but she accepts a job in Wyoming to photograph wild horses.

Every year the Bureau of Land Management rounds up thousands of wild horses all across the American West. Luke Bassett has one summer to photograph as many horses as he can to prove the health of Wyoming’s herds before round ups decimate herd numbers in the fall. Desperate to complete the project in a timely manner, Luke hires Sadie, ignoring concerns about her ability. When Sadie is unable to photograph the horses on her very first day, his concerns are confirmed. And if the project fails, he won’t be able to rescue more horses.

Sadie was convinced this would be an easy, low-key gig, but working with her camera dregs up long-buried emotional trauma. Fulfilling her promise to her sister means exposing that trauma, and she’s not sure she can do that. And her growing attraction to Luke terrifies her. She refuses to act on her feelings because loving someone means risking their loss.

Luke is wildly attracted to Sadie, and although she won’t admit it, he senses she feels the same. When her traumatic past is revealed, he realizes she needs his help as much as the horses do. He needs to convince Sadie not to give up on her photography because it’s clear that working with the horses is healing her. If she quits, it won’t only be Sadie and the horses who suffer. Luke knows he needs to find a way to convince her that she is making a terrible mistake before their time runs out.
